At Azars’ Music School in North Vancouver, we help students build strong musical foundations through private lessons, group classes, and RCM exam preparation. One important part of a student’s musical growth is music theory.
Many parents first hear about RCM Music Theory when their child begins preparing for Royal Conservatory of Music exams. However, theory is much more than an exam requirement. It helps students understand how music works, read notes more confidently, recognize patterns, and become more independent musicians.
Whether your child is studying piano, violin, cello, flute, guitar, voice, or another instrument, RCM Music Theory lessons can support their progress and help them feel more confident in their musical journey.

RCM Theory Levels 1–10 and Harmony Explained
At Azars’ Music School, we prepare students for RCM Music Theory from beginner to advanced levels, including RCM Theory Levels 1–8, as well as Level 9 Harmony and Level 10 Harmony & Counterpoint.
RCM Preparatory and Early Level Theory
Younger students and beginners start with simple theory concepts such as note names, rhythm values, rests, clefs, steps and skips, and basic musical signs. These early skills are very helpful for students who are just beginning piano, violin, cello, flute, guitar, voice, or other instruments.
RCM Levels 1–4 Theory
In Levels 1–4, students continue building their foundation. They learn more about rhythm, intervals, scales, key signatures, time signatures, and basic musical terms. These levels support students as their practical pieces become more advanced.
Even when students are not writing a formal theory exam yet, studying theory at these levels helps them progress more smoothly in their private lessons.
RCM Level 5 Theory
RCM Level 5 Theory is an important level for many students. At this stage, students begin preparing more seriously for written theory exams. Level 5 Theory includes important concepts such as scales, key signatures, intervals, triads, rhythm, transposition, and musical analysis.
RCM Levels 6–8 Theory
RCM Levels 6, 7, and 8 Theory become more detailed and advanced. Students study concepts such as harmony, melody writing, form, analysis, transposition, and more advanced musical terms and signs.
For students preparing for higher practical exams, these theory levels are an important part of becoming well-rounded musicians.
RCM Level 9 Harmony
RCM Level 9 Harmony is designed for advanced students who are ready to study how chords, progressions, cadences, voice leading, and musical structure work in more detail.
In Level 9 Harmony, students may study topics such as:
Chord progressions
Cadences
Roman numeral analysis
Four-part writing
Voice leading
Harmonization
Non-chord tones
Musical form and structure
This level is especially helpful for students who are preparing for advanced RCM practical exams, composition, songwriting, music analysis, or future post-secondary music studies.
RCM Level 10 Harmony & Counterpoint
RCM Level 10 Harmony & Counterpoint builds on the skills learned in Level 9 and introduces even more advanced writing and analysis.
Students may study:
Advanced harmonic progressions
Modulation
Secondary dominants
Counterpoint
Chorale-style writing
Melodic writing
More detailed musical analysis
Advanced voice leading
This level helps students develop a deeper understanding of how music is created and structured. It is also valuable for students who are preparing for higher-level RCM certificates or planning to study music more seriously.
