Complete . Looseleaf.... Download Now.Full Text Available Abstract Background An effective epidemiological methodology should be based on a sound mathematical basis and a sound theoretical framework. This is achieved when good basic scientific principles are applied to solve practical problems. In this paper the authors highlight the importance of such a framework and of the fact that a good epidemiological tool will always be based on the best evidence currently available. Once the validity and applicability of the various methods of analysis in epidemiology are established, then further criteria are available on which the applicability of the method to answer the questions posed can be judged. These are also indicated. Methods A review was undertaken of all existing articles on the analysis of data relating to the epidemiology of an infectious disease. The authors gave particular attention to the description and assessment of the methods used, the use of power calculations and the generalizability of the study results. Results There is no one right way to analyze epidemiological data. Each analysis method has its own strengths and weaknesses. There are a number of useful methods but each should only be used if the criteria for its use have been established and, if possible, applied to the data in hand. Conclusions It is essential that the validity of the study results and their applicability to the study questions are clearly stated and justified. This is often done by formulating hypothesis and applying appropriate statistical tests. The results of the study should be generalizable to the population at large if possible.
